005 Sean Tatol - St. Stephen > St. Stephen

mp3

At the end of 2020 I was asked to make a mix for a then-new series called Blue Xp. I wasn't in any condition to put together a conventional experimental music-adjacent playlist at the time because I was a newly-converted Deadhead and wasn't listening to anything else, but I had the idea of making a collage of the tune-up portions of Grateful Dead live recordings, which are plentiful. I thought it was funny, so I threw together a 30 minute "sound collage" without much trouble and that was that. About 10 months later someone asked me to do something for a radio show on Montez Press Radio, and I offered the mix because I didn't want to do any work. At the last minute the host told me the show was an hour long, so I hurriedly made a sequel, this one with the addition of some Jerry Garcia Band recordings and actual bits of playing that feature particularly bad vocal flubs or audio quality. From what I remember, a lot of it was made from direct recording into Audacity, so I think it was more haphazard than the first, although I'm not sure if that's perceptible while listening. It was only broadcast that one time so this is the first chance anyone has had to hear it since, assuming no one has ever played it off of Montez's not very convenient archive system. The first mix was titled "St. Stephen" because audience recordings often feature people yelling "Saint Stephen!" as a request. Fans famously liked hearing the song more than the band liked playing it, so the request was usually ignored. This sequel is titled "St. Stephen > St. Stephen" because the greater-than sign is used in tape trader nomenclature to signify one song transitioning into the next without a break. Naturally, a song never transitions into itself.
